All About Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles are multilayers of fiberglass elements which water-shedding roof components that rely on the slope of a roof substrate to shed water effectively. Asphalt shingles use fiberglass reinforcing mats and are designated as “fiberglass-reinforced asphalt shingles.” Asphalt shingles are categorized by their shapes or styles.
Problems on a Shingle roof repair:
Replacing only the damaged shingles or area after a storm ,is a very cost-effective BUT as a homeowner and a roofing contractor we have to consider several conditions such as :
- The glue strips on the tabs are very strong and difficult to separate. Doing that, creates more problems and damages at the shingle next to the damaged ones, than the storm in this case did.
- The shingles usually come in different shapes and colors. So the fine and final aesthetic appeal might be mismatching
- Also the shingle is compounded with layers. And a single thicker layer portion dissection of a shingle tends to crack. And when they crack they lose the fact that they were being built to and leaks when occur at that point
Still the contractor will do repairs, but sometimes the nature of the work is slow. And cannot provide the necessity warranties we usually advise in a complete replacement of roof. Every project has to be evaluated independently for repairs or replacement.
- 3 Tab- Products called “three-tab” and laminated shingles are categorized as strip shingles. Strip shingles are “self-sealing”; that is, they contain adhesive seal strips that bond to overlying or underlying courses of shingles for wind resistance. Three-tab shingles are in a strip form and generally longer in width than height. Ordinary dimensions for standard three-tab shingles are 12 inches by 36 inches. The standard dimensions are about 13 inches by 39 inches for metric three-tab shingles. These dimensions can vary depending on the manufacturer, and some newer products are available in larger dimensions than traditional standard or metric-sized asphalt three-tab shingles.
- Laminated shingles sometimes are called “dimensional” or “architectural” shingles. These shingles have additional material laminated to strips to create random thicknesses, thereby giving the shingles a more dimensional appearance. Laminated shingles also can take the form of full double laminates, cutout laminates (sculptured), and triple laminates. Dimensions and weights vary depending on the manufacturer.
- Many specialty shingle designs stand apart from the three-tab and laminated shingle categories. Historically, specialty shingles typically were smaller than strip shingles, and, consequently, more pieces were required to cover the same roof area than with strip shingles.
- As individual shingles were phased out, manufacturers introduced large-format specialty shingles designed to save application time and initially marketed for large and prominent steep-slope roofs. Commonly known as interlocking or individual shingles, they were notable for their unique visual patterns. Diagonal, diamond, and octagon were a few of the patterns that have been achieved with individual shingles, depending on their design. Current specialty shingles are available in various designs—some are enlarged units or provide increased exposure sizes or feature multi-ply laminated construction that may make them difficult to place in the traditional classification schemes.
